The Photo Safari Network and Rock Valley College have announced plans for a comprehensive, hard-cover book to document and showcase the iconic and interesting places of the Rockford area. This 19 month project has been dubbed Project Rockford and will involve over 60 selected photographers and 15 writers. There is also a dedicated portion of the book for area youth (19 years and under) to illustrate their work.
Project Rockford photographers will have access to areas not typically available to the public. Images created from these sessions will form the basis for the publication. ‘Rockford has a lot to offer, and capturing the essence of the area is the goal of this project. Participants will have significant input into the project, and be an integral part of the journey,’ noted Gary Gullett, President of the Photo Safari Network. Participants that attend all photo days will be guaranteed at least one photo in the book, and will receive publication credit for their selected photo(s). All participants will have an opportunity to submit for the prized cover shot, and there is a significant cash prize for that selection.
Interested parties can register through the Rock Valley College Continuing Ed class entitled Project Rockford. Participants were briefed on Saturday, September 7, and photographic work began that day with stops at the Coronado Performing Arts Center and Tinker Swiss Cottage. The second session was held on Saturday, November 16, but it is not too late to register for this class! There be approximately ten (10) sessions in total that take place throughout the span of the project. Participants will truly have a voice in the work, and we are depending on their creativity and sense of community to come up with images and concepts that the entire community can rally around. This collection of photos and notes will be both a reference and a source of local fine art for years to come. A portion of the proceeds from the class will be used to support additional Foundation youth and conservation projects.
If an individual would like to participate in the project as a photographer or writer, more information can be obtained if you call 312-470-6704 or email us. Please provide your ideas for businesses and other area locations of interest that should be included in the book.
