Midway Atoll: Off the Beaten Path Details

Situated 1,250 miles northwest of Honolulu and 2,200 miles east of Tokyo, lies one of the most incredible wildlife habitats in the world. Midway Atoll consists of three remote islands: Sand Island (the only one with any humans), Eastern Island and the tiny Spit Island. The islands are surrounded by a shallow white sand lagoon and sheltered from the surrounding Pacific Ocean by a coral reef. Visitors arrive onto Midway Atoll by private jet and stay in the old Navy officers barracks, now comfortably refurbished to host the few guests that are permitted on the islands at one time. Transportation is on foot, by bicycle or in an electric golf cart.

Bird photographers find this to be photography heaven. Picture the nearly 3 million birds, including 18 seabird species, that nest throughout the year on virtually every square foot of available habitat. Midway Atoll is host to the world’s largest population of Laysan Albatrosses, or "gooney birds." Other bird species include the; red-tailed tropicbirds, red-footed boobies, Laysan ducks, gray-black, white and sooty terns, black and brown noddies, as well as great frigate birds!

Witness firsthand why Midway Atoll is considered one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife destinations! Photograph the endangered Hawaiian monk seals, rearing their young on Midway’s beaches or the hundreds of threatened green turtles (that can weigh up to 400lbs) resting on the islands’ shores.

Due to the low population on the islands and lack of fishing restrictions, Midway’s lagoon is full of large and abundant colorful fish that are less fearful of humans. Get your camera ready to follow the frolicking pod of nearly 250 spinner dolphins that play in Midway’s protected lagoon waters!

You will have the luxury and flexibility of photographing the magnificent wildlife at your leisure as our schedule has been specifically designed to maximize your exposure and options in this island paradise!
